Where the animals come from
Besides other people’s pets, PEITE’s daily picks include animals waiting for adoption, all of them from Taiwan’s public shelters. We draw each one as a pixel animal from the coat and size its shelter wrote down, and send anyone who likes it to that shelter.
- The animals: the Ministry of Agriculture’s open dataset 農業部 動物認領養, under the Open Government Data License. It lists every animal in Taiwan’s public shelters, and we take only the cats and dogs.
- The shelters: we get addresses and opening hours from the Ministry’s Where that dataset cuts a shelter’s hours short, we use what the shelter’s own website says.
What we take: what the shelter listed, which is the species, sex, whether it’s young or adult, size, breed, colour, whether it’s neutered, its shelter number, the date it came in, the date it opens for adoption, the shelter’s note (shown word for word) and its page on pet.gov.tw. We also take the shelter’s name, phone number, address and opening hours. We keep a small copy of the shelter’s photo, so the card can still show it when their site is slow. What we never take: where the animal was found.
What we add: the pixel drawing, a stand-in name when the shelter didn’t give one, and the animal’s personality and lines in “Meet”. Those are game content we generate, not the shelter’s description of the animal.
When a listing comes down: we check the data four times a day, and we check one animal again whenever someone opens its card. If the data says the animal has been adopted or is no longer open for adoption, its card comes down at that check. If the animal is missing from two checks at least four hours apart, its card comes down too. If you had already liked it, it doesn’t just vanish from your matches; you’ll see “No longer listed” instead. The open data is at least a day behind the shelter, so whatever the shelter tells you is what counts. If you spot a mistake, please email support@peite.app or tell us with the contact form.
